Road transport remains a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, accounting for nearly 16% of global CO₂. To achieve national climate goals, the Swiss government is implementing ambitious legislation such as the Third CO₂ Act to reduce transport‑related emissions through cleaner fuels, efficient vehicles, and stricter emission limits.
Regarding biofuels, the Third CO₂ Act requires fuel importers and suppliers to reduce lifecycle emissions, which encourages blending biofuels into conventional fuels. Tax reliefs and exemptions are granted for certified sustainable biofuels, making them more competitive against fossil fuels.
By linking with EU frameworks, the Act ensures Switzerland aligns with European targets, driving greater adoption of advanced biofuels.

Technology & feedstock
HVO is produced via hydroprocessing, in which non‑edible waste such as used cooking oils is reacted with hydrogen at high temperature and pressure. It serves as a drop‑in diesel substitute, cutting lifecycle emissions by up to 80%. FAME (biodiesel) is produced through transesterification of waste oils with methanol and blended into conventional diesel up to 7–10% without engine modification. Bioethanol is fermented from non‑edible cellulosic biomass such as wood chips and blended with gasoline as an octane enhancer.
